The 2000 R1 was a development of the 1998 original rather than a new bike, with over 150 detail changes. It got a new air-induction system, lower-drag bodywork, a reshaped tank and seat for a more committed riding position, re-jetted carburettors, lighter camshafts and a taller first gear with a smoother shift mechanism. It remained a carburetted 1000 cc sportbike with a very high top speed for its time.
