The 1999 YZF-R6 was Yamaha's new race-replica 600, replacing the Thundercat in the sports class and borrowing ideas from the R1. A compact 16-valve four with R1-style split crankcases, ram-air intake and a short aluminium twin-spar frame gave it a claimed 120 hp and sharp handling. It was the first production 600 four-stroke to exceed 100 hp.
